Our Story

A lot of people talk about living an alternative lifestyle- rather than the regular 9 to 5 grind, being house and car poor, and filling their lives with stuff. Both Chad and I are drawn to that, an alternative way to live. One where we have more time together, with those we love, and enjoy what we're doing. Sailing seems to exemplify that kind of life. Although we have no idea what we are doing, we are willing to learn, and try, and fall. Who knows, this just might turn out to be life-changing journey.

Chad

I grew up in the Halifax, but have strong roots in Claire, Nova Scotia.

Starting out in the family business of 'Volkswagen Repair' I've worked as a auto mechanic for a large portion of my life. After deciding to not take over the family business I've been searching for something different. I ran my own sign shop doing vinyl graphics and design work. I spent years pursuing a career in music, recording albums and touring Canada. I've done some tattoos, had a short film win some awards, and started various YouTube channels. Nothing really sticks because I love learning new things. I love exploring new ideas and skills. Which brings us to Coast Life, Sailing Nova Scotia; An adventure VLOG about learning to sail.

Boats are not totally new to me but sailboats sure are! Despite never stepping foot on a sailboat I got the bug. A friend of mine, Michael grew up sailing and would tell me stories of him and his brother sailing the shores of Vancouver. Micheal also got me watching SV Delos years and years ago. It's all his stories and watching SV Delos that made it seem like something I could do.

Luckily I found an adventurous girl who said, we should take sailing lessons. So we did.... 5 of them. That brings us to our first video.

Growing up on the east coast of Canada, I definitely loved being close to the water. There's just something healing about the ocean. I'm drawn to the ocean in every place I travel, so the idea of travelling on the water was just too cool of an adventure to pass up!

I had never set foot on a sailboat until Chad & I took our first lesson. I was on a motor boat once and got to steer the wheel. That was pretty cool. But that was it for my boating experiences really. The idea of sailing excites and terrifies me; I love the idea of controlling a boat to move through the waves of the sea, and it's also overwhelming all the parts to remember in order to do it right. Plus, the ocean is friggin huge and we're only one tiny sailboat!

Lots of different paths have brought me to here. After university I travelled alone to Taiwan to teach English, and after that began a series of career choices; marketing coordinator, admin assistant, waitress/bartender, LSAT Instructor, event manager, and eventually going back to school for Public Relations. Right now, when we're not learning to sail or fixing up the boat, I'm usually learning about nutrition or conjuring something up in the kitchen.

There's so many interesting things to try in life, so why not sailing?!

I am grateful I get to share my life with such a supportive partner.
